Peniel (pronounced Pen-yel) is a Hebrew word meaning “face” or “forehead”. In the Bible, it refers to the place where God was pleased to manifest his glory before man. It is often translated as “the face of Yahweh”.

 The name Peniel means “Face of God”. It is mentioned only once in the Old Testament, in Numbers 13:17. It occurs twice in the New Testament, in Matthew 17:11 and Luke 22:43.

 In the Book of Isaiah, the prophet speaks of the glory of God being revealed at the face of the Lord. He says: “I saw the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up; and the train of his robe filled the temple. Above him stood seraphim: each had six wings; with two he covered his face, and with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew. And they called unto me, and I heard them not” (Isaiah 6:1-3).

 This verse is interpreted to mean that the seraphim were ministering angels who surrounded the throne of God. They represented the cherubim, which guarded the Garden of Eden.

 The word ‘peniel’ appears again in Ezekiel 1:26, where it describes the glory of God that appeared over the head of the priest Ezekiel.

 It is interesting to note that the name of the angel Gabriel is derived from the same root as the word ‘peniel.’
